Run Bangalore Run!

Running has become a very visible and popular sport or fitness regime over the last few years. The awareness about running and running events has gone up exponentially in a short span of time. Bangalore has become a sort of running and fitness capital in India with runs, races and events happening almost every weekend. It has the largest community of runners in the country and you can spot various groups and solo runners across the city, especially on weekends.

Apart from their neighbourhood roads and apartment complex peripheries, some of the most favourite haunts for Bangalore runners happen to be Cubbon Park, Kanteerva Stadium, Pipeline Road, Kanakpura road, Nandi hills. You can also try Sankhey Road, Lalbagh, Bangalore University route, Decathlon Sarjapur route. Bangalore has some fresh, fun and interesting running events lined up over the next few months.

1. The first one coming up next week is Shriram Properties Bengaluru Marathon. One of their promotional tag line says “London’s got one. Mumbai’s got one. Now Bengaluru gets its very own Home run!”. The run is supposed to be our own version of many of the famous world class city running events like Chicago Marathon, Mumbai Marathon or the London Marathon. The run path for BM will be through the city covering as much as possible of beautiful Bengaluru, it’s green cover, some lakes, some parks, part of the city center and other landmarks. There are a couple of categories – the Full Marathon (42.2 kms) and the Half Marathon (21.1 kms) and the 5Kms Fun run. If you are running this one, then all the best, have a great run! 2. Bangalore Ultra – This year will be the 8th edition of Bangalore Ultra. An ultra marathon is any distance more than a full marathon. This event has categories of 24 hr challenge, 75K, 50K, 25K and 12.5K. The run is on a trail and through a beautiful bamboo forest. It is  a great experience to see people stretching themselves beyond their boundaries and running high mileage distances. The whole atmosphere and spirit of the event is an inspiring experience. So put on your running shoes and register for the event. There is still time. Event Date – 8th, 9th November 2014. 

3. Ajmera Thump – This is the 2nd year of this running event. It has the categories 21K, 10K and a 5K fun run/walk. The race venue is close to Electronics City and the route is on the NICE road corridor which will be a road running experience along a lovely running route. As per the organisers Life is Calling Sports, the idea of this event is celebration. So there will be music bands and dance groups at the Start/Finish point. Lots of prizes to be won too. 4. Bengaluru Midnight Marathon – An interesting running event is the SBI Bengaluru Midnight Marathon. It was founded in 2007 to support various deserving charities across South India. It is Asia’s only midnight marathon and thus attracts a lot of participants every year. This year for it’s 8th edition, The Flying Sikh, Mr Milkha Singh is the brand ambassador for the event. The race day is a big social event for families and kids with multiple activities for them at the start venue. The evening starts with a cultural performance, a rock show and a flea market. The Half and Full Marathon run through midnight while the 5K and 10K categories finish earlier in the evening. Event Date – 20th December 2014.

To train for these events or in general to have a group to run with you can join many of the running groups in Bangalore. There are groups of various kinds ranging from just show up and run and we will take care of food, water and other aid to bring your own support stuff and run as a group. Choose what suits you best! You can even follow your own training plan to train and run. Training is important to get stronger and build endurance but more importantly to have injury free running. Some of the groups you can reach out to are – Jayanagar Jaguars, The Pacemakers, Runner’s High, Protons Running, Runners for Life.
