Move over Salsa and make way for Belly Dance!
The crowd in Bangalore is always waiting to tap their toes, sway their hips and have a ball on the dance floor! Dance shows, dance parties and workshops are essentials for dance aficionados. And Belly Dance is very happening & trending this season.
Belly Dance, believed to have origins from a French term (danse du ventre) meaning “dance of the stomach, is actually a misnomer! Belly Dance does not involve only one’s belly (be it flat, pot or beer) but every part of the body; the most featured body part is usually the hips. The focus of the dance is on relaxed, natural isolations of the torso muscles, rather than on movements of the limbs through space.
Originating from Turkey and Egypt, and contrary to the popular misconception as a dance of seduction, it was and is danced when women gather together to socialize in the middle east. Psst…, insiders share that women also chose potential brides for their sons according to the way the girl dances. Belly Dance was popularized in the western world by James Bond movies and recently sensational Shakira.
Belly dance is a non-impact, weight-bearing exercise and is thus suitable for all ages. It creates self-confidence, as women learning the art often gain a sense of empowerment and self-discovery through artistic self-expression. It can provide a way to express oneself, serve as a workout regimen, be a part of spiritual or meditative practice, offer opportunities to make friends and connect with others, and of course, bring great joy. It is truly a dance for every woman!
